We shop at our local farmers market every Saturday morning. Whatever we can’t find there we will purchase at the grocery store, but usually it’s not much. Where I used to live, we had a great store for buying in bulk, but we haven’t found a local store with bulk bins here yet–we keep looking and hoping. Great ideas!

YES! I LOVE IT! I just found your blog via Minimalist Packrat, and what a great post to stumble upon! I’m currently doing a month-long challenge of buying our food locally. I’m not going to lie, but I adore it! Much less packaging, no tax at the farmer’s markets, meeting the growers–it’s all so empowering to know exactly where your food is coming from. There are only a few things I miss that aren’t locally produced, but those will come from the bulk section once this challenge ends :) SO glad to see another green minimalist out there!

Reading your post just made me realize how lucky people in the US are. I just moved to Hong Kong and there really is no way you can grow your own food if you want to live in the city. Organic produce has come to Hong Kong, but not regulations for it, so a product labled organic really does not have too much mean.

I love beans and have experimented with the easiest way to cook them in bulk and then freeze them for use later. I’m vegetarian so need beans for protein. The best method for me is to cook them overnight in a slow cooker, low setting, with water, and then drain the water out the next day and freeze in containers. No need for soaking or boiling and slow cookers save fuel costs as they use less energy. My favorites are red kidney beans, garbanzo beans, and pinto beans.
